A sewing machine cover is a perfect project for beginners and an excellent way to use up your fabric scraps. Best of all, it’s easy to make!
During the pandemic, sewing machine sales soared. Everyone was making facemasks for first responders, family, and friends. Maybe you purchased a sewing machine as well.
Now that things are slowly going back to normal, you probably won’t be sewing as much. A cover is the best way to protect your sewing machine from dust. It’s also the perfect project for beginners and a great way to get rid of fabric scraps.
What you’ll need
- Enough fabric to cover your sewing machine, approximately two 25″ x 15″ pieces.
- 6″ x 11″ fabric for straps
- Thread
- Rotary cutter or scissors
- Measuring tape
- Quilting ruler
- Clips or pins
Before you start cutting any fabric, you’ll need two measurements: length and height + width. Add 2 inches to your final measurements. My sewing machine cover turned out shorter than expected because the width changes on top.
Ways to customize your sewing machine cover
For this project, I chose to add Sashiko embroidery. You can do patchwork with scraps, add appliqué or embellish with embroidery. It’s really up to your imagination.
Step 1: Prepare your fabric.
Before I started with Sashiko, I overlocked my denim to avoid fraying.
I then traced the pattern onto the denim and started stitching. It took me about an afternoon to have it ready.
Step 2 – Cut straps
Take the 6″ x 11″ inch piece of fabric and cut it into 1 ½” straps. You’ll end up with four pieces.
Fold each piece in half, press. Fold again. Press.
Close with a ⅛” seam.
Step 3
Place straps at approximately 6″ away from the upper and lower edges. Pin together. Leave a 3″ inch opening. Sew around the edge using a 3/8″ seam.
Trim corners and turn the fabric inside out. Use a chopstick or point turner to push corners out and press.
Step 4
Topstitch at ¼”.
